August adventures

I can't really believe it's actually September now. I can't really complain about the summer though. It was long and beautiful!

A couple of weeks ago was the annual friends weekend at Nathan and Telia's family place on Puget Island in the Columbia River. First I went to Portland and met up with Andrew, Danny, and Alison on that Friday night. We had dinner at Danny and Alison's, and then went to hear Andrew's friend Johnny perform at a coffee shop. This was a stop on his summer tour to promote his new EP that he recorded last fall with Andrew's assistance. It was fun to meet him, who I been hearing about for a few years. From there we drove to Puget Island. It was wonderful, as always. Always fun conversations, great food, and relaxation. There's always bocce ball, horseshoes, going to the slough and the sand island in the sweet yellow boat, and hanging out on the beach.. even when it's not particularly beach weather. This year we had a cloudy, cool Saturday, but we still went to the beach! But by Saturday evening the sun came out, and Sunday was gorgeous! Truly beach weather. I even swam in the river (briefly!). Some of the friends went wakeboarding, while I rode in the boat and cheered them on!
Things are changing in that group of friends. Telia and Nathan have baby Linnea now, and two of the other girls were pregnant this year. It was funny to sleep above where Linnea was and hear her happily babbling and blowing raspberries when we accidentally woke her up when coming into the bunkhouse to go to bed 6 hours after she had gone to sleep. She was hilarious! Babies are certainly always the center of attention! I was very impressed with Linnea. She was such a trooper, even when she didn't get regular naps like at home. It was a wonderful weekend, and as usual, it went way too quickly!

Last weekend was another big weekend, with Abbe's bridal shower, which Natalie and I hosted together. My and Abbe's (grammar??) college friend, Angie, flew in from Indiana to surprise Abbe, as she won't be able to come to the wedding in a month because she is due to have her third baby in October. She and I thought it would be great to have her come to the shower instead! It was fun to be in on the surprise, because Abbe doesn't get surprised very often! Patrick (Abbe's fiance) and I were able to stay tight-lipped, and she had no clue until Angie and I were on our way to the restaurant to surprise them after I picked her up from the airport. Even when Abbe had a clue at the last moment that a mystery person was joining them for dinner, she would never have guessed who it was. It was pretty fun to see her reaction! I like surprises: getting them, and seeing them being given (for the most part)! So, we had a fun weekend of girlie chats and catching up. The bridal shower brunch turned out well too! At the end of the weekend, a group of us church friends went for dinner at the home of a family from church, which was what I had bought at a youth fundraising auction several months ago. We had dinner in the backyard under the fig tree, which was a delicious meal of grilled salmon with green beans and wild rice and homemade peach pie. Yum. A fun way to end the weekend!
