musings on music

Current mood: impressed

Glory hallelujah!! I just had an amazing weekend at the Sasquatch Festival. If I would list all my highlights, it would be a pretty long list, but I'll probably list most of them anyway. It's pretty easy to say what the low point was, which was a hail/rain/lightning storm on Saturday afternoon. It was unbelievable, and I was sort of having some words with God about it, but actually it turned out OK. The weather cleared up again, and I ended up having an amazing evening watching The Shins, Ben Harper, and The Flaming Lips way down in front of the mainstage. It was awesome. Those bands were so different from each other, but all were great! I really enjoyed The Shins. They are pretty dang funny. Ben Harper was so.... I don't know - it was just really moving. He's so good at singing about heartbreak/love and political injustice! His bass player rocked. The Flaming Lips show was just so entertaining - the band's setup, the video, the dancing Santas and aliens , the superfans around me etc.. Bohemian Rhapsody performed by the Flaming Lips was pretty cool. There was even a little moshpit action for a minute. The show went pretty late that night because of the weather delay. My sleeping bag felt glorious after standing up for hours and hours and being cold (but it was all totally worth it). Oh yeah, earlier in the day before the storm, Sufjan Stevens played, which was a great show. He had a big band of multitalented musicians, which was cool. He played some of my favorites. The next morning was really warm and sunny, and I got to start off the day with Blue Scholars. That was great! I felt slightly less white there for awhile. Some other highlights of the day were Nada Surf, Arctic Monkeys (they had really good stage presence - funny lead singer), Decemberists, Matisyahu (complete with a rainbow), Death Cab for Cutie (sigh), and Beck. Beck really wasn't awesome in my opinion, but I was highly impressed by his crazy dancing man, and the marionette puppets that were a miniature version of what was happening on the stage. Sleep was a little less restful that night. I was woken with a panicky feeling in the middle of the night by what sounded like a large mob in the ghetto camping area chanting about wanting freedom NOW!! and plotting the tipping over of something (honey bucket perhaps?), and then there was the "Let's Go Oilers!" chanting. Fantastic. But I did get back to sleep again, and got to enjoy one last leisurely sunny morning hanging out at our "premiere" camping spot with my friends. It was a good bunch to spend the weekend with. I love you guys! I'm sad it's over after all that anticipation and a great time.

Currently listening : Plans By Death Cab for Cutie
